A chatbot to help students with Clearing

The University of Wolverhampton came to us with a problem a few months ago…

They wanted to be as helpful as possible to their prospective students during the stressful time of Clearing but without added strain thrown onto their staff.

Our solution was a chatbot.

The bot sits on Facebook Messenger and was built on Amazon Lex.

We also integrated into their site. We built it around automating the initial fact gathering, course interest and making sure the prospective student has the right amount of UCAS points. After the student completes their chat, it triggers an email to both the student and Clearing staff – the staff then take that data and get in contact with the student to discuss the informal offer further.

After running for 3 days, the chatbot made the university £1.3 million. It even had a higher conversion rate of 38%, compared to a conversation rate of 34% by the Clearing staff.

This is what David, the universities Digital Marketing Manager had to say

“We used Puzzle to build an automated, Facebook Messenger-driven chatbot as part of our Clearing recruitment campaign and were delighted with the results.”
